Since finishing up on the market makeover project, my food habits have changed for the better. I now make sure that I eat 5 meals a day, that includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and 2 snacks. My mother and brothers and I are more conscious about what we eat and actually make an effort to eat healthy and get physical activity.
Since commencing the market makeover my food habits have changed because I am more conscious about the food contents and the calorie count versus the amount of daily exercise I commit to each day. I learned that the majority of the food bought in South Los Angeles markets are not only unhealthy but are always fully stocked because they have a high demand. Many so-called healthy treats are not fully stocked in South Los Angeles markets because the demographic is attracted to junk food and need a different perspective on the benefits of healthy eating.
Due to the lack of pork or beef in my diet my family now instead uses ground turkey in most of our home-cooked dishes. Stemming from the market makeover, my eating habits have evolved for the betterment of well-being not because of weight loss. I suggest that other pro-health awareness programs engage in market makeovers because it does not only have a short-term but long-term impact on the community.
The biggest change in my eating habits since the market makeover would definitely me the fact that I pay more attention to LABELS!! I find myself reading the ingredients and trying to pronounce crazy scientific names. I've become more organic and have cut off chips and soda from my diet. Living in the dorm rooms is a big challenge because you don't have the option of cooking your own food. However, college also allows for the opportunity to try different kinds of food and I have found that healthy food is more accessible at school than at home.
My family habits have changed for the better. We applied some of the things we taught the storeowner at home, including techniques to maintain groceries fresh. We also have increased our variety of fruits and vegetables.
I learned a lot through this experience ranging from picking out the right vegetable to preparation of food.
